10th January 2006, Celtel donates relief food to Mandera Mobile service provider Celtel Kenya has donated relief food to famine victims in Mandera. Speaking during the flagging off of a truck with 20 metric tones of unimix to Mandera, Celtel Kenya CEO Gerhard May said Celtel was touched by the images of hungry and malnourished children and decided to contribute to the famine kitty. “We feel as a social responsible company that it is our duty to help the needy where possible,” he said. “As you all know, famine has been declared a national disaster in Kenya and there is need for concerted efforts to ensure that there is adequate food, water and medication for those affected,” he added. The food was received by Special Programmes minister John Munyes, who thanked Celtel for coming forward with the donation. Celtel Kenya also donated mobile phones and air time to the Kenya Red Cross Society to facilitate the communication for the staff involved in food distribution in the famine hit areas. The CEO said the Celtel network has spread out widely and covers the majority of these affected areas, which makes it easy to coordinate the exercise via mobile phones. Gerhard said that Celtel is committed to Making Life Better for all and appealed to key players in the business community to support the famine kitty.
