
May 24th, 2006, Celtel Kenya Unveils a Kshs. 30 Million Staff Training ProgrammeMobile service provider Celtel Kenya today unveiled a Kshs. 30 million staff training programme. The programme dubbed ‘Celtel Academy’ will enable the over 600 staff to go through training in various fields to boost their skills and enhance their careers. Celtel has partnered with the London Business School in the United Kingdom and the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa to have its staff trained at either of the institutions. Speaking during the launch ceremony, Celtel Kenya CEO Gerhard May said: “As an employer, Celtel is committed to Making Life Better for its employees through career advancing skills development.” “I am pleased to announce that first two groups have already been to the two universities and have completed their courses. I know for sure they are a testimony that Celtel indeed makes their lives better,” he added. Gerhard said that through training, Celtel staff will be able to even serve its customers better as the company focuses on giving its clients world class mobile telephony services. The programme was unveiled by Trade assistant minister Abdirahman Ali Hassan who commended Celtel Kenya for initiating staff training in top universities in the UK and South Africa. Celtel Kenya Chairman Naushad Merali said the company was keen on career development for its staff to enable them embrace the latest technology in the mobile phone industry and compete effectively with other players in the industry. “Celtel is indeed committed to Making Life Better for everyone and by making our employees happy, then, they will serve you better,” said Merali. Celtel staff will be trained in various fields ranging from management, customer care, public relations, marketing, IT and GSM operations among others.
