Phone services

How to start Roaming

The SIM card in your phone needs to be programmed to use networks in other countries. Contact our Customer Care team for more details.

The service will be activated upon request on the same day upon receipt of payment of the necessary deposits as shown below. It is mandatory that both services (international and roaming) be activated. The relevant deposits for international roaming are:

- Roaming Deposit: Kshs 5,000

Note: Before Roaming, confirm that your phone is compatible with the network(s) you intend to visit. For example when travelling to the USA, Canada, South and North America one needs a GSM 1900 mobile. A GSM 900/GSM 1800 will work in many of the countries outside America. Tri band mobiles (GSM900/GSM1800/GSM 1900) are available on the market.

How Do I use the Roaming Service?

On arrival in a foreign country, switch on your mobile phone.

  • The phone will automatically initiate a network search. After the network search has been completed
  • The phone will display a list of all the available network operators within the country you are visiting.
  • Most phones have manual and automatic network selection. If your handset does not automatically display the list of network operators available, you may need to manually select the network by using the network selection menu on your phone.
  • Select the relevant Celtel Roaming partner for the country that you are visiting.
  • Your phone will initiate the registration with the selected network and you will be connected. You can tell when you are connected because the name of the network or the network code will appear on your phone's display to confirm that service is available
  • You should now be able to make and receive calls on your Celtel Mobile phone number.

Making Calls while Roaming

For calls to mobile phones of the same country dial the number with the prefix of the network operator as if you are one of the country’s subscribers.

For landline calls of the same country, dial the area/city code before calling a landline number of the country you are roaming in

For international landline calls (from roaming country to another country), dial the "+" or the country’s international access code, the country code, and city code and the telephone number you wish to call.

For calls to mobile phones of another country, dial the international access code, the country code and the mobile code before calling the mobile number.

Receiving a call while in a foreign country: Whilst abroad - anybody in Kenya would still be able to reach you by only dialling your Celtel Mobile Number.
